VP6 - Pitcairn Island

Indlæg af oz7c » fre apr 26, 2019 20:18

Hej
VP6R will be on 6M EME from grid CG44ww looking on the air for what W7GJ,
Lance, calls "Magic band lunies." W8HC and W0VTT will just do EME on 6,
not other popular EME bands, due to changes in gear and operator plans.
This will be in October, the best time for EME, with the "lowest degradation,
" excellent "moon windows with all continents." They hope simultaneous
operation on HF will not hurt their 6M receive.

The VP6R 6 Meter EME dates are October 21-27, October 18 to November 1 for HF,
with local moonrise on October 21 at 0915Z. They will have 1500 watts to a single 6M8GJ
Yagi with elevation, fed with LMR600 coax, JT65a with VP6R always transmitting first
sequence. Look for them on 50.200 MHz with 1271 hz offset (DF=0 on JT65a from WSJT 10.)
They will use the W7GJ EME DXpedition protocol, with a Flex radio.

With elevation, if you are horizon only they can match your moonrise and/or moonset.
All their moonrises will be over the ocean, so they will have a ground gain lobe between
zero and -2 degrees elevation. The antenna will be 750 above the ocean level.
They should be able to track the moon when it is above 17 degrees.
There is a slight rise from the QTH to the west so they likely won't be able to
see the ocean on moonset, with the lowest lobe at that time being around 7 degrees.
They will also be able to do FT8 and will be monitoring for TEP propagation.

Hej

VP6 - Pitcairn Island
Yesterday the VP6R, October 2019 Pitcairn Island, DXpedition team's
"20 foot sea container arrived in Peoria".
VP6R team members will be working to transfer equipment from their
40 foot Bouvet (3Y0Z) DXpedition container to the smaller container.
This will take place over the May 11-12 weekend. Afterwards the members
will then head on to Hamvention. They hope to have their container ready
to go by the first of next month. It needs to be in ZL by August 1st.

Hej

Nine of the fourteen Pitcairn Island DXpedition team members
(N4GRN, W8HC, K9NW, K9CT, WB9Z, W0GJ, K0PC, W0VTT, and K0IR)
met in Peoria, IL this [past] weekend.
They selected the equipment they need, removed it from the ill-fated 40 foot Bouvet [3Y0Z) container,
and placed it in their new 20 footer. That container is now ready to be sealed and begin its truck,
rail, and sea journey to get the gear to Pitcairn Island in October.

Included in the container are several boxes of supplies and tools for the residents of Pitcairn.
The team members also took a collection among themselves to purchase some entertaining
and educational gifts for the children who live on Pitcairn Island.

Images from the weekend are available on the News & Updates page of their website,
https://pitcairndx.com/news-and-updates/. The team wishes to thank everyone who is helping to make this happen.

Hej

VP6R Pitcairn Island -update by Ralph K0IR
The Braveheart called on Pitcairn on schedule on Sept. 6.
All our DXpedition gear was unloaded and taken ashore by the Pitcairn Island longboats.
Generators, fuel, antennas and masts, Flex radios, ACOM amps,
the DX Engineering 160 vertical, Yagis — everything. It’s all there, stored safe and dry in the engineering building.
When the roads dry out, all our gear will be moved to our operating sites and be ready for us when we arrive in October.
This process will save us 150 to 200 man hours of installation time and get us on the air much faster.

Hej

The Pitcairn Island DXpedition team (VP6R) will be launching a full-
scale multi-multi effort in the CQWW DX SSB Contest on the weekend of
October 26th and 27th. They will be offering a contact from zone 32
and the first ever VP6 multiplier in this event. The multipliers will
be available on all bands, 160 through 10 meters.

If you're not in the contest, no problem. Just give them a signal
report and your CQ zone in the exchange. Then work a few other
stations just for fun!

Hej
VP6R Pitcairn Island Press Release 10 October 2019
______________________________________________________________________

I experienced a sudden and relatively severe, acute illness and was
hospitalized for a number of days. I am recovering at home, but the
risk of compromising the DXpedition to Pitcairn Island is too great
for me to make the trip with the team. My friend Glenn, W0GJ, will
take on my responsibilities and the DXpedition will proceed as
otherwise planned.

Most team members will have begun their travels within the next 24-48
hours. The October 15th flight to Mangareva and boarding of the
Braveheart remain on schedule.

This is a great disappointment for me, but the show will go on. I
thank all of you for your past encouragement and support. I have
great confidence in all of our team members; they will give this
DXpedition their all.
Ralph - K0IR

The team members are very disappointed that Ralph K0IR is unable to go
with us. Ralph has invested countless hours organizing and preparing
for a successful DXpedition! In fact, it has been so well organized
that it is almost on autopilot! We have been unable to find a
replacement for Ralph on such short notice. Many potential substitutes
were unable to clear their schedules to be gone for a month with just
a few hours notice.

We are READY to go! All of our personal bags are packed, as we had to
have weight & volumes for Air Tahiti, our Papeete to Mangareva flight
next Tuesday. That connection is only once per week. The Braveheart
will be waiting for us and we'll set sail almost immediately for
Pitcairn. We will be arriving Thursday morning at Pitcairn. All of our
cargo is ALREADY at our operating site. We will work hard that first
day to get as many antennas up as possible to get on the air by the
end of the day, Thursday, October 17. We must QRT by November 2 to
make it back to Mangareva to catch the weekly flight again.

We are going to work extra hard as a team to make Ralph proud of us,
as he has all but invested the last two years of his life into this
project.

Visit our website often for updates. There you will find contact
information for our pilots who will help us optimize our band/modes
and propagation paths. Any information on long or short path openings
would be welcome to our pilots. Financial contributions are most
welcome, too! See our website for more details.

73 and see you in the pileups!
Glenn - W0GJ

Hej

Yesterday the VP6R team arrived on Pitcairn Island and before the sun
went down they had seven antennas up with the 6 meter EME antenna
built, but not in the air. As of earlier today they had three stations
QRV. Today they plan to have the 160 and 80 meter "antennas up at the
old radio site" with a "full bore" expected later today, their time.
Logs will begin to be posted later today at
https://clublog.org/charts/?c=vp6r. They are posting their photos on
Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/580069859103416/.
